ARNG Drill Sergeant Program

TRADOC Drill Sergeant Augmentation

UPDATE 20080529 – The Active Duty Augmentation Program mentioned below has been re-opened to accept applications for the following year (2009 Summer Surge). If you are interested you need to get your packet in so it can be approved to attend. School dates are immaterial at this point as you need to clear the first step of qualifying your packet with the support of your Command. We will work on school dates after you meet the qualifications.

The ARNG is currently seeking qualified NCO's to attend the Active Component Drill Sergeant Course at Ft. Jackson with all associated funding provided by the Army, at no expense to the Soldier's state or unit. Drill Sergeants will then incur a One-Summer commitment (90 - 130 days on active status). The Soldier will be required to serve as a Basic Combat Training (BCT) Drill Sergeant at one of the Army's five Army Training Centers (ATC) posts; FT Benning, GA - Ft. Jackson, SC - Ft. Leonard Wood, MO - Ft. Sill, OK - Ft. Jackson, SC - Ft. Knox, KY).

The Drill Sergeant Candidate must be a SGT - SFC and meet the Drill Sergeant Criteria found here. PLDC/WLC is non-waiverable.

Soldiers that have been awarded the Drill Sergeant additional skill identifier (ASI X) can also volunteer for this duty. The Soldier will be required to attend the Recertification Course at Ft. Jackson, SC if it has been 12 months or longer since working in a Drill Sergeant position.

Federal and State deployments will take precedence over this program. Soldiers may not volunteer if they have been notified of a future deployment.

Application Procedures

1. Complete the submission form if you are interested in this program and believe you are eligible to participate including the time frame you will be able to attend Drill Sergeant School. Note: Submission of your information at the website is for tracking your progress only. The Drill Sergeant packet must be approved and signed by your Chain of Command before a Drill Sergeant training seat will be allocated.

2. Once you receive verbal permission from your Chain of Command, download and complete the required documentation.

3. Each applicant must submit an SF 86 (Questionnaire for National Security Positions) with your State Security Officer utilizing E-Quip, regardless of your current security status. You must complete and send a fingerprint card (FD 258) to the address below. The fingerprint card can be obtained from a local Recruiter and completed at a local police department. Your State Security Officer will adjudicate the completed packet but final disposition is not required in order to attend. You must complete this portion though prior to attending school.

If you do not have a current security clearance, you will be required to submit an SF 86, by contacting your State Security Manager for use of the E-Qip Website. You must complete and send a fingerprint card (FD 258) along with a letter head stating it is for Drill Sergeant School to the address below. Your State Security Officer will adjudicate the completed packet but final disposition is not required in order to attend. You must, however, complete this portion prior to attending school.

You must complete a DD369 (Police Records Check) and include it in your packet.

BE ADVISED:

During the initial orientation at the Drill Sergeant School (DSS), Drill Sergeant Candidates (DSC) will be asked to fill out the Background Screening Assignment Eligibility Questionnaire (DA Form 7424) indicating whether they have been arrested, apprehended, or investigated for any Type I or Type II Report of Unfavorable Information within the previous 12 months. Forms will be forwarded to HRC (AHRC–EPO–A, ATTN: EBSS). If a Soldier indicates possible misconduct that could be a disqualifier from DS duty, HRC will make the final determination and notify the DS school if the Soldier will be removed from the school.

Soldiers who refuse to complete DA Form 7424 (Sensitive Duty Assignment Eligibility Questionnaire) are subject to further background screening and/or removal from the DS school. A Soldier’s refusal and any adverse information of a nature of that requested in DA Form 7424 discovered during the investigation will be reported to HRC (AHRC–EPO–A, ATTN: EBSS). HRC and/or NGB will make the final determination and notify the DS School if the Solider will be removed from school.

4. Once the Soldier's information has been submitted online, you will need to continue to complete the required documentation for school. A copy of the completed Commander's Checklist with authorized signatures will be sent to the POC for quality assurance. You will also advise if your current security status is valid or if you had to submit a security packet. Do not send original copies as you will need these for inprocessing at the school house. The applicant will be advised of the class dates available for placement into the ATRRS by NGB.
