Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are the differences between the Active Duty Augmentation and the RSP (Recruit Sustainment Program) Drill Sergeant?
A: The Active Duty Augmentation requires 9 weeks of training (Ft. Jackson) to become a Drill Sergeant and 90 - 130 days of active duty (TDY) during the summer of 2008. This program is funded by the Active Duty Army with no cost incurred by the State.
The RSP Drill Sergeant requires 9 weeks of training (Ft. Jackson) to become a Drill Sergeant, the same as the Active Duty Augmentation. The Drill Sergeant will Drill one weekend a month, at an RSP Site within the State, preparing newly enlisted Soldiers to successfully attend Basic Combat Training (BCT). The length of the tour as an RSP Drill Sergeant will vary with an agreement between the Soldier's Chain of Command and the RSP Commander. The State will be responsible for funding this program.
2. If I volunteer for the Active Duty Augmentation, will I be activated to work the following year in 2009 or into an RSP?
A: No, the Active Duty Augmentation is only for Summer Surge 2008 without any further commitment. If the Soldier wishes to work in the RSP, he or she may volunteer provided that their Chain of Command and the RSP Commander approve the request.
3. What if I get alerted while I am in school or when I am TDY for the Summer Surge?
A: Deployments have priority over this program. You will be returned to your unit if they are activated and your Command requests your presence.
4. If I have been certified as a Drill Sergeant, will I have to attend the entire 9 weeks of Drill Sergeant School?
A: No, if you have been certified as a Drill Sergeant and have been out of that position over 12 months, you will attend the 2 week refresher course at Ft. Jackson.
5. If I am a Specialist, can I attend?
A: You must hold the rank of E5 thru E7 and have attended either Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) or Warrior Leaders Course (WLC).
6. Can I extend to stay on active duty longer than Summer Surge or become a Title-10 Soldier?
A: The current obligation is only for 90-130 days and there are no Title-10 positions available for Drill Sergeants.
7. Can I choose the Basic Combat Training (BCT) Post for the Active Duty Augmentation?
A: No as the Active Duty Army will determine where you will be needed and best utilized.
