What to Bring to BCT
The following information simplifies the transition from civilian to military
life, so keep it handy, and read it again before you leave for training. You
are required to bring these items with you or purchase them upon your arrival
at the Reception Battalion. Your luggage should be limited to one small suitcase
or duffel bag containing the supplies listed below and a minimum of civilian
clothes. As always, see your RRNCO if you have any questions. Be sure to bring:
Your Orders
All your orders and documents (including your Form 1199 for direct deposit
of your pay) are to be delivered by you, by hand, when you arrive at your
Basic Training Reception Station. Be sure to have all copies of orders and
documents issued by your unit RRNCO and/or MEPS. Travel and meal tickets
will also be provided to you.
Clothing
Arrive in civilian clothing. During training, civilian clothes are worn only
during leisure hours. Uniforms are usually issued on the first full day of
in-processing, so bring:
- Two-day supply of casual, comfortable clothing
- Three sets of underwear (white)
- A pair of comfortable shoes
- Luggage (should be limited to one small suitcase or duffel bag)
- Two locks (combination or padlock with two keys)
- Eyeglasses band (if you wear eyeglasses)
- Athletic supporter (males only)
- Six pairs of white, calf-length athletic socks (no color bands, designs,
or logos)
- Running shoes
- Toiletries
- Disposable/safety razor with blades
- Shaving cream (optional for women)
- Toothbrush with case
- Hairbrush or 6-inch black comb
- Two washcloths and towels
- Anti-perspirant
- Shower shoes
- Toothpaste
- Dental floss
- Shampoo

- Travel and Meal Tickets: MEPS will supply these on the day you report

Personal Documents
If applicable, bring certified copies (not originals) of:
- Marriage certificate
- Divorce decree
- Birth certificates for children under 18
- College transcripts
- Social Security card
- Driver's license
Also bring your Direct Deposit Form 1199, signed by a bank official, along
with the name, address, account number, and routing number of your financial
institution. You can also use FMS Form 2231 for your direct deposit. If you
are married to another service member in the Army National Guard or any other
military component, you must supply the name, Social Security number, and military
address of your spouse.
You must also bring copies of your lease agreement or rental contract for
any dependents residing outside of government quarters and documentation of
any ROTC experience.
Money
Twenty-five to fifty dollars worth of traveler's checks or money orders will
cover the cost of personal items and entertainment. Because of limited check-cashing
facilities, personal checks are not recommended
Eyeglasses or Contact Lenses
You will be issued military glasses, so bring a copy of your current prescription.
During BCT you will occasionally train with a protective mask. As you will
not be able to wear contact lenses or glasses during this training, you will
also be issued a prescription insert for the mask.
