Event Selection

In order for the National Guard Recruiting and Retention Marathon Program to be successful in its mission in Recruiting and Retention, and to remain highly competitive in running competitions, various considerations must be considered when selecting events to compete in.

The Military Competitions promote esprit de corps and camaraderie among team members and bring national recognition and respect to the National Guard’s Marathon Program among the other branches of the Armed Forces. Efforts to maintain involvement with military competitions such as the Marine Corps Marathon and the Air Force Marathon will continue, however, due the Recruiting nature of our unique program these events may be substituted on certain years to allow the All Guard Team to compete in other large high profile civilian races that will enhance recruiting lead opportunities for the National Guard.

Events are selected based upon available funding, event and expo size, number of days of the expo, location of event, etc.

Larger events with two day fitness expos are sought to maximize Recruiting opportunities.

Race distances are also considered to give runners opportunities to compete in distances less than that of a full marathon. This will help reduce the number of injuries that can occur by continually competing in full marathons, and also open up recruiting opportunities to a broader range of runners who may not compete in marathon distance races.
