The Army Green Service Uniform - Male
This uniform is a versatile ensemble of parts that can be worn in various
combinations to make either a Class A uniform or a Class B uniform. These
uniforms may be worn throughout the year for a wide variety of occasions, either
on or off duty, during travel, and at private or official informal social
gatherings.
The Class A uniform is like a suit. It consists of the Army green coat and trousers, worn with either short-sleeve or
long-sleeve green shade 428 shirt and a black necktie. This uniform is used for
special occasions like graduations, promotion boards, promotions, and any
special event put on by the military. This uniform may also be worn to civilian
functions such as weddings, religious services, and the like.
The Class B uniform omits the coat. The tie can also be omitted if
the short-sleeve shirt is worn. The Class B uniform is what soldiers wear when
they are not working in a field environment. Soldiers in the National Guard who
serve part-time do not generally wear these uniforms, but you will need to know
some information about them.
The Army green coat is a single-breasted, peaked-lapel coat with four buttons. The fit should provide a
slight drape in both the front and the back, but should be fitted slightly at
the waist. No pronounced tightness at the waist or flare below the waist is
authorized. The enlisted sleeve is plain. The length of the coat will extend
below the crotch.
Matching green trousers are straight-legged and without cuffs. Trousers have side and hip pockets, and the
left hip pocket has a buttonhole tab and button—which should always be kept
buttoned. The enlisted trouser leg is also plain. With these trousers, a belt
must always be worn.
Uniform shirts, whether short-sleeve or long-sleeve, must bear the official designation, AG 428. Both are considered
dress shirts and have shoulder loops, seven buttons, and two pockets with
button-down flaps. If the optional pullover sweater is worn with the
short-sleeve shirt, and the tie is not worn, the shirt collar should be worn
outside of the sweater. The optional windbreaker can also be worn with the AG
415 sweater.
Both short- or long-sleeve shirts must be tucked into the trousers, whether or not the coat is worn. The edge of the
shirt opening should form a straight line with the front fly opening on the
trousers and the outside edge of the belt buckle. The black beret is worn with
both the Class A and B uniforms.
Other authorized headgear, such as organizational berets and drill sergeant hats may also be worn
with Class A and Class B uniforms. See "Wearing Your BDU," for more information
on the proper wearing of the beret.
