The First Sergeant
(1SGs) will:
- Involve themselves in solving problems for soldiers in their
units.
- Execute the unit attrition management plan.
- Ensure 100% of all required interviews take place in a timely
manner.
- Ensure an effective sponsorship program is implemented and
maintained.

- Ensure all NCOs and first line leaders in particular are
present for NCODPs that address strength maintenance issues.
- Advise their commander on actions and issues that affect
strength maintenance.

in the ING with the purpose of eventually bringing them back to an

issues receive the emphasis and action required for quick
resolution.
First Line Leaders (FLLs) are key
to the success for strength maintenance programs. They are in
position to best influence soldiers to remain in the ARNG. They
will:
- Know their soldiers. This includes a clear understanding of
the soldier's family and civilian employment situations.
- Keep themselves abreast of their soldiers' ETS date and other
information that may affect their career and duty performance.
- Commit themselves to training/mentoring their soldiers.
- Conduct all required interviews and counseling including
soldiers in the ING.
- Be alert for potentially problematic situations affecting
their soldiers. Take proactive measures to reduce or eliminate any
adverse effects.
- Be accountable for the attendance of their soldiers at
scheduled training. This includes contacting their soldiers the
week before drill or AT and contacting soldiers who have an
unexcused absence.
- Sponsor newly assigned soldiers and integrate them into the
squad/section.
- Ensure non-prior service soldiers are prepared for BT/AIT.
- Encourage team members to refer quality leads for enlistment.
